Teaching Spaces for a Local College
When schools, colleges and universities require various spaces to create an optimum learning environment, it’s essential to incorporate layouts, furniture and equipment relevant to each subject. When a local college approached Simply Workspace to design, repurpose and refit a room for multiple students, we jumped at the challenge.
The Brief
We were requested to create a space where Construction students could learn various skills for the construction and building industry, such as brickwork, plumbing, electrical and woodwork. But this was only stage one. The room needed to be optimised for Electoral students who also required the space.
The Problem
Each class has a set number of students at any one time, along with their lecturer. This meant we had to ensure the room’s layout comfortably fit everyone without impacting health and safety regulations.
Our client also advised that the lecturer would present from the centre of the room. We, therefore, had to make sure that every student could see the lecturer and that the lecturer could easily keep an eye on their students.
Before
The Solution
This project required site visits to familiarise ourselves with the shape and size of the space. This enabled us to map out the most effective working and teaching set up. We opted to use the outer edges of the area, designing individual cubicles for students to hone their craft. At the same time, the lecturer could conveniently move between them, or gather students in the middle when needed.
We used fire-rated materials for the cubicle walls and units to ensure we aligned with building health and safety regulations — as well as including yellow hashes on the floor to clearly indicate safe walkways for students and visitors.
The Outcome
To avoid too much disruption to the college or students, we were given the eight-week summer holiday to complete this project. This was no problem, and we are delighted with the results. The team worked incredibly hard, and we’re proud of the final piece, which now offers a functional learning environment for students to thrive in.
